Beth Levin Paper-making artist Statement Paper is one of the world’s most unifying materials. The process of transforming plant fibre to finished paper, a technique unchanged for thousands of years, is inherently alchemic. I find it irresistible. As an artist working with handmade paper, I am interested in questioning the conventional concept that paper is fragile, two-dimensional and serves only as a vehicle for information, printed or pictorial. My intent is to expand the boundaries of how people understand and relate to paper. I want viewers to question what they are seeing. The materials I use strongly reflect my respectful relationship with the environment that surrounds me. I choose annually renewable fibres such as abaca, cotton, flax and hemp. My work reflects the forms and textures of the earth. Currently, I am exploring the characteristics of strength, translucency and shrinkage and the resulting forms and textures
